[gameprogrammer] MSVC++ (and more) Express Editions - Free (the whole thing!)

Since most of us are probably using one of the these languages to program our games in, here's something a friend let me in on:

Microsoft, from Nov 2005 to Nov 2006 will allow you to download, free of charge(and free of any future charge!), the full version of Visual c++ (as well as many others, Visual Basic, c#, j#, web developer, SQL server) Express Edition. There really are no strings attached. You can even get around the "registration key" requirement(though it involves a very large download!). I'll explain how:

visit http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/expre . t/install/ and download the .img file for the program that you'd like to install. (all of them ~460MB)

Change the .img extension to .iso. Burn it to CD with your favorite program (if your favorite program can burn .img files, you don't need to rename it... But mine can't, so I had to rename it to .iso)

This CD-install version doesn't require a registration key. It's that simple! For once, Microsoft has done something right! (If you can't do the large download - you can still get the software free, but I HATE registration key activation... Plus, it's a real headache if you want to install on multiple computers... )

After installing, you might want to opt of of the "Visual Studio Anonymous Improvement" program, which will likely be found on your taskbar... Just double-click it, and choose "no"... Then it's gone.

There it is - perfectly legal, completely free...

(By the way, after November 6,2006, it will not be free anymore, so if you're interested, I really would download and burn a copy of the whole thing, so that you'll have it later if you need it. )
