"offline job". Basically a player who wants to make money signs up for an
offline job. When they go offline they'll be controlled by an AI that will try
to push them into doing their job. Jobs would also give one protection from
death penalties and such, maybe when there is a danger they could cower and
teleport away? It's not realistic that all of the suddent they can tele, sure,
but it's for the sake of fun.
Of course certain jobs, like escorts, are more dangerous than others.
So a NPC controlled PC has higher stats, but the same stupid mind. The nice
thing is that when players enter they are free to do what they wish. They can
still actively help, but maybe in some other forms.
An example is Bob the Miner, Bob is a miner, when he's offline he's doing the
boring mining work. But when he comes online Bob goes adventuring looking for
asteriods or planets rich in certain minerals, colonizing and fighthing in
order to adquire more mines in which to work. Maybe bob even achieves to be a
manager, looking for workers and such. Even though Bob helps with a couple of
tons of mineral a day (say due to tech) when he's offline, he helps by
adquiring more resources and preparing them for using.
Say Bob always goes with a friend, who's also a miner, Fred. Fred isn't as
good figthing as Bob, but he's good building, he likes building bases. He makes
sure that what Bob gains for the corp stays for the corp. He's the kind of guy
that prefers to play building games than figthing games. Of course building a
mine would not be that easy, there would be interesting challenges to handle.
Yet still when offline, Fred also mines like Bob.

Does this work with your view?
or perhaps there would be jobs from your corporation available in your sector,
and when you go offline you could chose a job to do in that sector. of course
the jobs available to you would depend on:
 1. your postion in the company
 2. the type of work your corporation thinks you can handle

maybe there would be authorizations that a character would have to buy or
attain to be elligible for certain jobs.
this means that a character completes missions for the company to recieve
working privileges as a reward. more priviliges might not only mean more
choice, but also more pay???

 just my 2 cents worth
