Yes. I am currently on Word 2002 (MSOFFICE XP PRO). To get readability
statistics you can select the Tools menu and the Options pop-up dialog.
In the Spelling & Grammar tab, the Grammar group (bottom of dialog)
check the 'Show readability statistics'. Then in the 'Setting...'
button pop-up, you can set the rules you want checked. Then whenever
you force a spelling and grammar check, you get a guided tour of
suggestions to your writing. At the end of the check you get the
readability statistics. After a while, the option become irritating
because you begin to know what it is going to say, but it helps to keep
it turned on.
I have an old copy of WordPerfect. It was my processor of choice, but
industry kept asking for Word documents. WordPerfect use to do spelling
and grammar checking. I believe there are versions that run on Linux.
I have not used those. I don't often use my Linux machine.
Also, there use to be (I don't know about now) stand-alone grammar
checkers. The last one I used many-many-years ago was Grammatik. It
was one of the first. I think, but I don't know, that it might have
been absorbed by Microsoft and stuck into MSOffice.
Checking this document for spelling and grammar, (Word is also my email
editor) it says my last phrase 'might have been absorbed by Microsoft
and stuck into MSOffice' is in passive voice and suggests that I
consider revising.
