[gameprogrammer] GL 2.0 on Xorg w/ ATI's proprietary drivers

Hello,

I seem to remember that there are some ATI/Linux users on this list so
after I've been told to go away by ATI support I thought I might ask
here.

In short, on my system (Linux 2.6.9, Radeon 9600 SE, ATI proprietary
drivers 8.24.8) I'm unable to link any program that uses OpenGL 2.0
shader API (glUseProgram, glAttachShader etc.).  References to those
functions are reported as undefined by the linker.  A curious thing I
noticed is that ATI's libraries (libGL.so) actually don't seem to define
those symbols (even if fglrx_dri.so and atiogl_a_dri.so do contain them)
so at the lowest level, it's no wonder linker complains.  The question
is now, how come some GL 2.0 symbols are missing?

Now that ATI refused to even tell me whether or not GL 2.0 is supported
in their drivers 8.24.8, does anybody here have any experience with
running GL 2.0 on ATI cards under Xorg?
