But which is more fun?

Reimplementing is always more fun! It all boils down to whether you are
doing something to get a job done, or you are doing it for the
experience of doing it.

The boss doesn't like it so much, but I am not in this industry to just make money like a robot, I am in this industry because I love software :) Still, I probably wouldn't implement from scratch on software that is going to a client.... Well, not too often - I am the perfect candidate for www.thedailywtf.com :)

Or is that the joke, that sometimes we take the interesting long option vs the short less interesting option, but its obviously absurd since you have all the time in the world after the afternoon to get something interesting done?

In software you can learn a lot from reading the libraries you
are using.
Maybe I should try that some time :)

Yeah, you should. I read Doom once, great read. Actually, there are
couple of games where I had more fun reading the source code than
playing the game.

Hahahaha :)
