A lot of games companies also use C due to less of an overhead, If I
remember correctly, I think Halo and Halo 2 were done in C. Usually imo
games written in C usually have their own in-house code for dealing with
classes using virtual tables and whatnot (Don't quote me on it).
But I would say C++ is the thing you should learn,

I'd stick with C++ and, if you haven't already, check
out OpenGL. Between GL and SDL, you shouldn't ever
have to touch directx, although if you're looking for
a job at a company that makes games, you'll probably
need to be able to get around in it.
C++ is going to be around for a while, so it's a
pretty safe bet.
