I'd stick with C++ and, if you haven't already, check
out OpenGL. Between GL and SDL, you shouldn't ever
have to touch directx, although if you're looking for
a job at a company that makes games, you'll probably
need to be able to get around in it.
C++ is going to be around for a while, so it's a
pretty safe bet.
