I downloaded the source to Mozilla, tried to compile the plugin API
for Windows, and got a ton of compiler errors. I couldn't fix them

You looked the gecko SDK, or the mozilla sources? The SDK has many
example codes and even bare skeleton, which can be used as the base of
ones own plugin.
It was a good idea though. If anyone else sorts this out please let
us know.
