Try the GIMP.
http://www.gimp.org/
It's rather similar to PhotoShop and for practical matters about as
powerful. Long since I used PS personally, but the general concensus
seems to be that GIMP lacks some of the GUI smoothness of PS (preview
not implemented in all filters, for example), but has extremely
strong scripting support and some other strong points.
Oh, and it's Free/Open Source (in case you need/want to hack it, port
it to some odd hardware, or just don't like to depend on the whims
and well being of some company), and the price is unbeatable! ;-)
Binaries are available for Un*x platforms, Windows and Mac OS X.
(Speaking of hacking: http://cinepaint.sourceforge.net/ That's the
true meaning of "Use The Source, Luke!")
Sorry 'bout the Free/Open Source ranting. (Hey, there's a reason
my .sig says what it says! ;-) Hope you find the software useful.
