Thats what I think too.
So I just add:
I'll try to list some things you should know about or grok completely
after the college.
- Assembly - low level, how computer does it
- ADT, big Oh (complexity) - data structures, they are the the basic.
if you grok both and undestrand how each data structure performs
everything from now on will be much much easier
- Invariants - understand how loop works
- Grammars - systematical approach to languages
- Functional programming - get to touch with Lisp or scheme
- Simulation and modelling - games nowadays are but a fancy simulations
- Parallelism and Synchonization - if you know ADT "every
synchronization technique becomes a way how to express front" ;).
- "OO" Patterns - understand WHY and HOW they
This is very important. Quake does "threads" for example.
This is all I can think off now. If you already knew it you probably
don't need any college at all ;)
One may argue you've to be rather practical. But I think you need some
theory. At least for the fact that knowing something about them allows
you express your thoughts more easily.
I personally would't go to college where they offer you level design,
engaine programming and all this crap. I'd fear I migh become very
dull and unispired. On other hand going to generic college (?) will
make you know more than is needed sometimes.
If you wanna make something cool in your craft you have to look into
other crafts.
Hope this incoherent set of thought helps somehow :)
Best regards
