Yeah... That would be a problem. Not to mention that when all your
commercial software is stolen you have no economic incentive to seek out
free software.

There are lots of free alternatives to C++. Python is a good choice. If
he likes Basic then Gambas may be what he wants. Or, he may be really
happy with Blender. Blender is great, it combines a 3D modeling tool
with a game engine that you script in Python. Blender is 100% free/Libre
software. And there are tons of good documentation and tutorials
available online.
