When I was a student, the most aggravating part for me was what Scott
mentioned above, Math, and Simple Projects. I know lots of programmers
who still struggle with math, I don't know why, but it hurts my brain.
Secondly, simple projects. I think the only time I spent longer than
30 min on any single assignment was when it was a semester long
project, or an assignment from one teacher who thought up very cruel
assignments(cruel, but fun, the solutions always required that extra
bit of polish). But, all these only took a max of 4 files usually. So
when I actually got a real job programming, all the sudden I had
projects using libraries, 20+ different modules, etc... with no clue
how to put it all together. I think if you start your class with them
writing some simple stuff, and just add/build onto it as you go, so at
the end you have a hefty project file, that requires more than one
compiler command, you would be helping them a lot.
