I would add that you are free to implement your own spell checking
algorithms. You don't have to use the SCU.
If you're only creating Mac applications you can use the Einhugur
spell checker plugin (I've done this). On Windows you could probably
try to tie into a MS Word object for spell checking (never done it in
RB).
Like Brendan said, it's a business decision. If spell checking is a
necessity in your project then you don't have many options -
especially cross platform solutions.
