MS Word's Smart Quotes

I'm sure that you've run into this... Copying and pasting from MS
Word to an FTC is causing apostrophes to be lost. It likely has
something to do with Word's "smart quotes" feature. I've found that
if I copy from Word and paste into either TextEdit or Pages first, the
"smart quotes" get converted into regular ones that will paste into
FTC's correctly. Is there a workaround?
Thanks,
