Custom "text" objects

I'm working on embedding some "text" objects, very similar to the Custom 
Hyperlink, however I would like the custom object to be updated when the 
user changes the font and style information on a given range of text 
(text and my custom objects combined in a single selection).  How can my 
custom object know when it is supposed to adjust its font, size, height, 
color, etc.?
