dear friends, at june's meeting, pete white reported that we have $3,100 committed toward our goal of $6,000 for building homes in chacraseca. the sg foundation has offered to match what we raise up to a maximum of $6,000, so $12,000 could be available to build six houses. recipients of these homes may be asked to pay an affordable sum that would be used to build more homes. a structure needs to be set up to identify candidates for homes, to pay a project coordinator and to select contractors. on the lewis-oliver garden project, soil has been removed on the 26-by-50-foot plot. topsoil and compost are expected to arrive soon, and planting will have to be done quickly, according to lisa flanagan. students and friends agreed on a 50-50 split for the cost of plants, tools and other items. for next year, garden sites in elwood and huntington station will be explored. rick firstman, an author whose daughters were active members of students, made a fund-raising proposal. it involves recruiting customers through network marketing for ambit energy, which supplies natural gas to local homes. in areas other than long island, it also supplies electricity. this is a commercial enterprise, but the company would donate money to charities such as ours. for further information, call rick at 631-754-5848 or visit www.ambitenergy.com.
