dear friends, we welcomed three representatives from the east northport rotary club, which has expressed an interest in nicaragua water projects. as it happens, action was taken at the very same meeting. members voted to recommend a basic hand pump and arsenic filtration system for the community of nuevo amanecer. the cost is about $4,000 and could be covered by the existing students for 60,000 fund dedicated to nuevo water. of course that group will be briefed on this proposal. the general feeling is that the nuevos have not received service even though a well was dug two years ago, and they have been hauling water at a distance and with hardship for some time. members are checking out the hand pump and the arsenic filter system that would be used by each household. the aim is to get this system working quickly, and at a later date look at providing a power pump and a tank system that could also be used for irrigation. tentative arrangements have been made for a fund-raising party at the home of millie willen. it would be held from about 5:30-8:30 on saturday, july 28. admission would be $50 per adult, $25 for students. millie's family has offered to supply the food. each of us is asked to think of items for an auction. also, the nicaragua committee of our lady queen of martyrs church is having a dinner, on friday, june 8, from 7-12 at the thatched cottage in centerport. cost is $75 per person. call ann meyer at 262-1242 for more information and reservations. our next meeting will be at 7:30 may 3 at temple beth el. hasta agua.
