***This is a message from a member of Friends of Students for 60,000***

dear friends,
at last night's meeting, thanks were given for all of those who helped out
with cow harbor day. a special salute to millie willen for allowing the use
of her house as a staging area and for setting up tables. a lot of people
stopped to talk to us, and hopefully their awareness of our existence will
give the group a boost. pete white reported that friends made a profit of
$170 at the event, $100 of it in donations. however we have about $300 worth
of unsold goods such as sandals that can be offered for sale again.
it appears that a donated school minibus may arrive in nicaragua via water
rather than land. mike cipoletti and tim rugile had planned to drive there
with a load of bikes, and the bus would be turned over to the chacrasecans
for their use. the cost of insurance, bribes to mexican police, fuel, etc.
seems to make shipping a better alternative. no final decision has been made
pending resolution of issues such as the vehicle's title.
the group at james madison university, once commanded by shari kornblatt,
plans to send $8,300 to conchita in chac for uses to be decided.
pete said that paperwork has been sent to the irs for formation of two
chapters, one based in massachusetts and the other in florida. the chapters
will be mainly self-directed and responsible for their own finances and
projects.
pete is waiting for a lawyer to propose a waiver form to help protect
friends in the case of lawsuits.
carol werblin is checking ways that friends might pay to supply food to
folks in the huntington station area. she noted that the need for food is
great and existing organizations are having trouble meeting demand.
