Toastmasters meeting at the Moo G. Moon Education Center

Hello Fellow Toastmasters,

Table Topics and International Speech Contest.

Toastmaster for evening was Jennifer Dunne.  This was her first role as
Toastmaster for a contest and she did an amazing job.  You would not have
known this was her first time hosting a contest.  She kept the meeting
moving along and filled in the down time with fun facts from Rocky movies.

Chief Judge was Dirk Kittredge.  Dirk did an excellent job relaying the
contest rules to the judges and to the contestants.  It was organized and
very professional.  (

*I would not have expected anything less from Dirk)*
Table Topics Question:  What do you hope your friends will say about you at
your funeral?
5 Contestants participated in Table Topics

1.  Susie Kirksey-Minskey.  Normally a sad occasion.  Where does the spirit
go?  She hopes her friends will say "WOW Man, she lived a heck of a life".
Growing up in projects, moved to Denver.  She made something of herself.
She married and is an attractive grandmother.  Great life.

2.  Russ Agnew.  That guy was awesome.  Free Spirit.  Had WEEBLES.  Snorkel
with whale sharks.  Loved to be good.

3.  Jonathan Kolber.  What do you want on your tombstone?  Purpose - to
have a destination.  Immortality is a possibility.  He was a really good
chauffeur.

4.  Colette Smith.  I have the easy part.  Sense of love, community and
service.  She was a mentor, friend, mother, and grandmother.  Present in
the moment.  Will not be remembered for big screen TV, being too short or
too tall.  Will be remembered for legacy.  Go forth.  Lead your own legacy
for time well spent.

5.  Bill Farrand.  What a happy topic.  Six people will attend.  People
don't like him but dogs do.  Ashes in Nevada.

All contestants were very good.  Unfortunately there can only be one winner
and that was Bill Farrand.  He was very funny in the only way Bill can be
funny.  I sit in the audience amused and impressed.  I wonder to myself how
his mind sometimes works.  The humor is very unique.   I love it.  The only
reason Bill's recap is so short, I was laughing too hard to write notes.

Intermission.  Food in the kitchen.  Thank you to everyone who brought food
for all of us to munch on.  Cookies were delicious.  I should have eaten
more fruit but it was hard to pass up the English Toffee.

SPEECH CONTEST.
Four contestants participated in the speech contest.

1.  Jonathan Kolber.  "The wonderful day I almost died".  It was 6am.
Sleepless night.  Trip to the Emergency Room.  Catheter was inserted.
Bladder swelled up to three times the normal size.  Best day of my life -
month of catheter.  1.  Business meeting.  2.  Bent over in pain.  Blood
out of catheter.  3.  Heart rate spiked.  Life lesson.  1.  Empathy.  2.
Accept pain.  Suffering is optional.  3.  Life Purpose.  Serving it.

2.  Jerrod Hannah.  Organ Harvesting.  14 years ago.  Scoliosis, God, and
suicide?  Know the meaning of life.  FaLendafa - ripple of changes.
Supporting human rights.  In China, it is illegal to be kind.  Only 15 days
wait period for an organ.

3.  Susie Kirksey-Minskey.  "Dear Little One"  Growing up in this world
will not be easy.  You will suffer heartaches - no matter, you will
survive.  You will be a grandmother at age 30.  Family is everything.
Knowing what not to do.  Earn respect and dignity.  Life will have many
challenges.  Some you can see, some you cannot.  Success does not equal money
or a fancy house on the hill.  Success is is a roof over your head, someone
who loves you dearly.  Precious daughter of God.

4.  Russ Agnew.  Walk with me.  Time travel.  Go to the ocean beach with
drinks and hula girls.  Human mind is like an ocean - beautiful, calm, and
vast.  Drove up next to someone with sunglasses.  Russ in a foot boot and
limps and hobbles.  Shots are fired.  Teacher yells at everyone to go up
against the wall..  Windows shatter.  Stephanie is shot.  That someone with
the sunglasses was Eric Harris.  Years of therapy.  Forgiveness is
Freedom.

And the winner of the speech contest was RUSS AGNEW.  It was an amazing
speech.  I was so caught up in the speech, I stopped writing.  It was an
emotional topic.  Until the name Eric Harris was mentioned, I didn't know
where this was taking place.  And once Eric's name was mentioned, we all
knew.  Well done Russ and congratulations.

While the votes were being counted, Jennifer Dunne interviewed the
contestants up front.  Table Topics:  3rd place went to Colette Smith.  2nd
place to Russ Agnew.  And the winner was Bill Farrand.  For the Speech
Contest 2nd place went to Jonathan Kolber and the winner was Russ Agnew.
Congratulations to everyone that participated and a special Hooo Rah to
Bill and Russ.

Closing Remarks by Marieta Ferrington.  Marieta organized the contest
event.  She put in many hours of preparation and it showed.  The emails by
Marieta started weeks ago.  She was gracious and thanked everyone for
helping her out.  She handed out thank you cards and thanked her mentor
Lori High.  (

*ladies and gentlemen, that's classy).  *
I am very aware how much time and preparation goes into a speech.  I
thought everyone did an excellent job.  It's too bad not everyone can win.
But everyone that participates gets the experience that no one else gets.
It'll stay with you forever.  A contest is a little different than a regular
speech in our weekly meetings;  The stakes are higher.  The moment and the
reward is a little more special.  I'm impressed with the talent that is in
our group.  It makes me proud to be a part of this Toastmasters.

It was another You Should've been there event if you missed it.

Until next week.  I am your humble secretary.l
