Oh!  The problem was not with the dsl - my daughter was visiting and she was 
able to connect with no problem-using her Mac.  But AT&T had me jumping through 
hoops this time and wanted the high price of tech services just to reconnect my 
freebox(vector linux pc).  I went with AT&T because they were 
reasonable/affordable for me.  All I wanted was to be reconnected.  I could not 
and do not understand why the repair of the wire from the house to the pole 
would cause the internet not to work with my freebox.

No dsl can only travel so many feet along the copper wire and it must be in 
Good 
shape, if not then you will have intermitent service or none at all. You pc is 
most likely just fine.
