Actually, I did examine hundreds of templates, commercial and noncommercial.
I took a Sunday afternoon to look at templates. I found a few noncommercial
ones that might work for us, but, all in all, the professionally designed
templates are cleaner and more flexible designs. The commercial designs
really stand out after looking through endless pages of free templates.

Templates, commercial and noncommercial, sometimes require Adobe products to
modify the design or graphics. We largely avoid this dependency with Joomla
Shack designs. When there is a dependency, Joomla Shack includes the source
code. Whether the commercial templates are more stable than non-commercial
ones, I couldn't say. I do know Joomla Shack has support forums for Joomla
1.0 and 1.5, a separate forum for each of their templates and a
knowledgebase.

Chuq sent an email to Joomla Shack regarding the limitations of the Element
template and asking if there is a Joomla 1.5 version in the works. We were
aware that running a 1.0 template in 1.5 is not advisable, but the group
liked the Element design so we included it in the poll. The free Joomla
Shack Optimus template is nice but lacks features of the commercial
versions. There is a commercial version of Optimus which we could substitute
for Element if need be. I personally favored the Inspirion template because
it features the k2 extension, but others didn't like the design.

The goal here is to pick an inexpensive, good looking, feature full and
versatile design which we can live with for a while and learn from, and
which moves us forward quickly. So, does anyone have a preference ranking of
the three current candidates?

I take it you looked through the hundreds of free 1.5 templates and these
are that much better or more stable somehow?

I would remove Element from consideration, it is a 1.0 template not a 1.5
template.

Running a 1.0 template on a 1.5 site is possible but in no way easy.

My suggestion would be only consider 1.5 templates

There are a gazillion templates available for Joomla web sites, and some of
them are way cool. The dev group decided to narrow its focus to three
professionally designed templates from Joomla Shack which we think are
suitable for our web site and which use FOSS technologies. The three
templates are EarthBlog, Relevant and Element.

If you are interested in voting, please visit the Joomla Shack site and look
at the live demo for each template and the specs. Then rank your preference
from 1 to 3; one being your favorite. A preferential vote is called an
Instant Runoff Vote (IRV). The template with the most votes wins. If there
is a tie, possible although unusual in IRV, I will pick the winner from the
tied templates.

Joomla Shack template licenses cost $40 per web site.

The Element template is not Joomla 1.5 native so Chuq sent an email to
Joomla Shack asking whether Element works with 1.5, what it lacks in 1.5 and
whether a native 1.5 template is in the works.
