Present: Sherral Stamatovich, Judy Bradley, Fank Bradley, Kenneth C. Wharton, Mike Cook, Terry Click, Tom Brown

.: Modem Lesson - Part 2

I gave an additional lesson (Mike gave part 1 last Tu.) on installing and setting up a modem. I discussed port assignment, interrupts and demonstrated the software setup for Vector Linux using vasm. I installed an internal 33.6 modem on Judy Bradley's FreeBox and tested it with my Michiana Freenet account. It worked fine.

.: CDROM Installs

I had purchased a dozen CDROM drives from PC Surplus Online for incomplete FreeBoxes. Terry, Kenneth and I put four of them into existing FreeBoxes. Now I can schedule another class. We didn't have time to refurb more boxes for a second class.

Five of the drives were bad. I called PC Surplus and asked for an RMA. The rep said to keep the bad drives -- he would send replacements. And, if the replacements are a problem, I should call him again. Hopefully the drives will arrive before next Tues. If they are late, we have 2 left from the original 12 and 4 donated by John Billings and Korean-American Community Services in Chicago.

.: Games

Mike is collecting games for Vector Linux 3.2. The goal is a library of known good games which we can install on volunteers' computers if they ask or use to teach volunteers how to install programs on their own. VL has a stripped kernel and is missing libraries normally found on full installs of Slackware.

Mike is looking for compact and fun games without library dependency issues. Mike tested several at lab. I believe he found four which installed ok. Judy Bradley tested a Mahjong game for Mike. He had to reconfigure the tile size to work within the confines of a 15" monitor.

.: Nick Montgomery Visited

Captain Nick Montgomery stopped by to grab some documents and to remind me of the United Way of South Bend grant panel review on Thu.

Tom
