Lab Notes, 3/2/04
--------------------------
Present: Olin Zuercher, Tom Brown, Yunchung Yu, Jay Schlatter; 6:00 - 9:30 PM
:: Replicate NV2800 Conversion / Edit Draft NV2800 Conversion Howto
Mike Cook was ill with the flu so we cancelled the conversion trials. The
task objective is to convert a second and third NV 2800 to ethernet and
LTSP net-boot before we publish the howto. By replicating the original work
we will confirm our success and refine the howto. We'll take up this task
as soon as Mike is well.
:: Finalize Design for Workbenches
Olin obtained three metal doors which we will use for workbenches, probably
at the Barn. The doors cannot be used to implement Mike and Olin's
workbench design even though they are light and sturdy. We shelved the task
until Mike is healthy again.
:: Write Workbench List of Materials (shopping list)
Also postponed.
:: Sort the Upper Room to Prep for Demanufacturing
Also postponed.
:: March FreeBox Classes
Tom scheduled a FreeBox class for last Saturday, Feb. 28, and recruited six
students. Only two showed up so the class was rescheduled for this coming
Saturday, Mar. 6, at 2:00 PM. Tom will continue to recruit FreeBox
prospects for classes on March 6, 20 and 27.
We need to inventory our FreeBoxes and test enough additional monitors to
match with them. That means a Barn run to either test monitors or bring a
load to the church for testing next week. We may need 18 finished systems
for three classes this month.
Jody Montgomery spoke at an agency which helps seniors. The agency
recruited six seniors for a FreeBox class. Tom will give the recruits a
preparatory class in the lab on Saturday, March 20, 10:00 AM - 12:00 noon.
Those that do well in the prep class can take any subsequent regular
FreeBox class. Most, if not all, of these seniors have never used a
computer. They will likely fail in the fast-paced FreeBox classes, which
are geared to younger adults. So advance instruction and practice in basic
skills and concepts is important.
:: DSL Service for Lab
Jody also informed me that the church is switching phone service to Choice
One. Choice One is offering at least one year of dsl service as part of a
promotional package. Jody didn't know the details regarding the level of
dsl service, but it is probably equal to SBC basic service. Jay thinks the
basic service is in fact business oriented dsl, 128Kbps up and down,
burstable to 384.
