Lab Notes, 2/3/04

Present: Olin Zuercher, Mike Cook, Tom Brown; 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM

:: MBO Review

We reviewed the tasks set about six months ago. The core volunteers have completed 13 of 30 tasks, and other tasks are partially complete. The consensus is to complete the remaining tasks before adding new ones. An accounting of the projects and tasks is attached. One task was not on the list: Compile VL 3.2 kernel to accept Intel HAM based controller-less modems.

We also reviewed the volunteer credit system.

:: Disassembly Workbench

Mike and Olin took on the task of designing and building a prototype portable demanufacturing workbench. The two sketched several designs and settled on one which they will build.

:: Late Breaking News

[2/5/04] - Tom spoke to the Roseland Rotary Club at lunch and received a terrific response. We may pick up another FGM volunteer or MLUG member. Rotary members were eager to see GNU/Linux on the donated laptop. Two of the members serve on the Dismus House board and are interested in referring Dismus residents to FGM. If you know other groups looking for a speaker, tell Tom.

[2/5/04] - One of the Roseland Rotary members called today to donate 24+ Compaq P-133 boxes, each with 32-64 MB, Intel nic, mouse/kybd, 15" monitor. Unfortunately there are no CDROM drives or keyboards. The boxes are decommissioned from the Notre Dame Federal Credit Union (NDFCU). NDFCU donates old computers to schools, but the schools don't want these dinosaurs. They'll make LTSP workstations. The boxes won't be ready for 30+ days because the HDs must be securely wiped. The IT contact, Skip Yoder, invites FGM volunteers to help wipe the drives if we want them sooner. I'll find out when we can assist the ND FCU techs. Maybe we'll schedule a Wipe Fest...er, maybe the name needs a little work.
