New updated information, Posted 5/13/03: http://www.in.gov/idem/oppta/recycling/electronics/index.html We may want to start getting ready to write some grant applications. I have been thinking about the overall plan, and we need good relations with a recycling company or two. We also might want to consider breaking the recyclables down to plastic/aluminum/steel and see if we can find someone who will pay us $$$ for it. The problem is this creates a lot of work and I do not see a lot of volunteers knocking on our doors. Of course we really can't do anything until we have an agreement with Portland Free Geek, or we get a temporary 501c3. I am working on a policy for electronics disposal policy here at Goodwill, and I may need to talk to Tom and who ever else would like to sit in about how we can make it easy for Goodwill and other companies to give computer equipment to Free Geek. The problem people/non-profit/companies want to cherry pick the pile of computers and leave the rest for the entity to deal with. I think it would be highly possible to setup an agreement between Goodwill and Free Geek, but at this point Goodwill is looking to dispose of all the electronics. I went to free geek Portland site and I looked at the suggested donation for equipment recycling, which would bring us revenue to pay for handling, but how do we handle a larger corporation and or non-profit that has a boatload of computer equipment to dispose of. If it is a suggested donation, then they are not required to pay it. I guess we need to have some idea how Free Geek Michiana is going to handle it so I can better massage my disposal policy to fit the needs of both companies.
