:: Boot from HD
I found reference manuals for type 8363/8364 (N2200L/N2800e) thin clients.
None of them mention an ide header on the mobo. However I put an ide data
cable on the header, and it fit perfectly. There is no power connector for
an ide hd on the mobo so we would need to hack the power supply to add a
hard drive -- if the power supply has enough capacity. The bios has no
settings for local boot other than nvram. I would guess the N2800 will not
boot from a local hd, and its not worth the bother to try.
:: Boot from CompactFlash
This is an option. What do these cards cost? What does it take to flash them?
:: Linux
Neither of the thin client product references mention booting from a Linux
os, only MS products (2000, NT, etc). Unless the bios is somehow rigged so
specifically for Windows that it won't boot from Linux, I see no reason not
to try the N2800 on LTSP.
:: Token Ring
Well, there is Token Ring.
I couldn't find a setting to turn off the onboard TR nic. So we may be
stuck with TR. I can install an ethernet nic with bootrom (I've got one)
and see what happens. If not, TR hubs are running as low as $9.99 +
shipping on Ebay.
According to IBM Type 1 TR cable is plenty good for ethernet and is
equivalent to cat 3. But a Google search found problems with impedance and
pinouts. IBM Type 1 TR wiring is 150 ohms; cat 5 is 100 ohms. I couldn't
find anything at IBM's support site re TR RJ45 pinouts. But I found enough
elsewhere to know that the the pinouts for TR are different from ethernet.
