Latest word on the Sun kit is: The donors will drop off the gear this
week at warehouse on Tu. or Thu. The whole donation will arrive at once
so it will be a lot of big boxes. We'll have to stack it up in a restroom.
I checked to see what distros run on the UltraSparc-II processors in
these boxes -- they are dual cpus. OpenSolaris 10 and Debian will
install. OpenSolaris is probably better supported. But, Sun Solaris is
not Linux. We might want to try Debian first. Another issue is whether
the StorEdge A1000 units will work under Debian.
Finally, we have enough projects on our collective plate right now.
Fiddling with the Sun gear may have to wait a bit. Another possibility
is trying to sell the stuff on Ebay or to a data center to raise cash.

Our donor (John) and I are having a difficult time handing off the Sun
servers. John had car trouble Friday and had to cancel the drop-off.
When he called to reschedule, I asked him how big the servers are
physically. They are 6U rack servers which means about 12 inches tall,
and he has at least four of them.
I'll contact Forest re doing a pickup with his van. I suspect the donor
will be greatly relieved if we get the servers. Plus, there are external
storage arrays which match the servers at the same location.
While I waited for the donor at the warehouse, I twiddled with creating
the standard FREE GEEK logo using Xara Extreme (XE). XE is the vector
graphics package included in Vector Linux. After a bit, I started to get
the feel of the software and produced a draft logo. The upshot is I can
use Xara to produce logos and simple graphics to import into OpenOffice2
to make computer labels, gaylord labels, handouts, flyers, etc.
