Newsletter to feature interview with Michael Dell
Last week, E-Scrap News went to Austin, Texas to talk with Michael Dell,
CEO of the world's largest computer company, about his views and
predictions on electronics product stewardship. We will feature a
summary of his comments and reflections in the next e-newsletter; the
full interview will be published in the February issue of E-Scrap News
(for subscription details, go to www.resource-recycling.com
<http://www.resource-recycling.com/> ).

EPA seeks small processors
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (Washington) has issued a
notice for federal agency electronics recycling and asset disposition
services. The proposal is limited to small businesses that can handle a
variety of e-scrap items, including PCs, printers, scanners, copiers,
cell phones, etc. A number of vendors will be selected.
Additional details are available from Oliver Voss, EPA
Purchasing Agent, at voss.oliver@xxxxxxx; (202) 564-4514.

NEPSI: Few bets being taken
Interviews with a number of the negotiators involved in the National
Electronics Product Stewardship Initiative indicate there is no
predictable output likely from the group's meeting next week in
Portland, Oregon.
To a person, those interviewed say that issues are coming to
a head, especially because NEPSI has essentially run out of money. In
addition, a number of participants say it is time to "fish or cut bait"
in terms of potentially recommending an electronics recovery and
recycling system for the U.S. That said, none of the participants were
able to express with confidence the result of the two-day meeting.
_____
Battery recycling increases
More than four million pounds of rechargeable batteries were collected
for recycling in the U.S. last year, an increase of 22 percent, reports
the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corp. (Atlanta).
Since 1995 the industry alliance has collected 21.9 million
pounds of batteries, including those used in cell phones, digital
cameras and laptop computers.
_____
Dell issues recycling grants
A dozen communities from Alaska to South Carolina have been awarded
electronics recycling grants by Dell Inc. (Round Rock, Texas). Each
grant of $10,000 is for a recycling collection event this spring. Some
200 local governments, institutions and non-profit groups applied for
the grants.
As part of its efforts to boost local recovery efforts, Dell
and the National Recycling Coalition (Washington) plan to hold training
sessions for local government officials in California, Louisiana,
Massachusetts, Michigan and New York.
