Freebyte update: December 10, 2001

Dear Freebyte newsletter subscriber,

We have updated the following items:

(1) 'Freebyte's Guide to free email services': the page is moved to a
new location, http://www.freebyte.com/email. The page has received a
major update, dead links
are removed, new email providers and categories have been added, the
lay-out is much improved.

(2) Custom Address book, the shareware version has been updated to
version 2.0
Custom Address book is an easy to use, small, and extremely flexible
Address Management program for Windows. The program is unique, among the
many
apparently similar programs, in that it enables you to define your own
address book! You can find freeware, evaluation and shareware versions
of Custom
Address book at: http://www.freebyte.com/addressbook
* added: auto-dial. Double clicking on a phone or fax field will start
the auto dialing process if a modem is connected.
* added: active hyperlinks. Double clicking on a field containing WWW,
FTP, News or email data, will open the associated program.
* added: direct menu items to the 'define attributes' and 'define
categories' screens (menu/options).

(3) Several new links on free chemistry software have been added to the
'Freebyte Chemistry Reference' section at
http://www.freebyte.com/reference/#chemistry

(4) TreePad PLUS has been updated to version 4.5.
You can find freeware and shareware versions of TreePad
http://www.treepad.com
New features in versions 4.4 and 4.5 (shareware), compared to version
4.3:

Images
Added: export a selected image to a .bmp, .jpg or .gif file. You can use
menu/file/export/selected image, or pop up menu article/export image.
Added: copy a selected image to clipboard: menu/edit/copy or article pop
up menu/copy
Added: cut the selected image to clipboard: menu/edit/cut, or article
pop up menu/cut

Hyperlinks
Added: a function to create catalogs of directories and disks. A TreePad
disk (or directory) catalog is a sub tree representing all the files and
directories on a
removable disk or inside a normal directory. This option does not import
any files, just the name, size, date and location of the files. Using
menu/tree/insert/catalog of
files in Advanced mode one can swiftly insert a catalog into the tree.
A disk catalog can be useful e.g. in creating a searchable database of
all your removable disks (CD's, floppies, ZIP disks, etc.). Having such
a database will simplify
finding the right disk when you need a certain program or data file.
With this function you can also create and manage shortcuts to files and
directories on your
hard disk. This option is more extended than what can be found in
specialized disk-catalog programs like CatFish and Cathy which do not
possess TreePad's
advanced search, organizing, reporting, print, export, import and HTML
generation capabilities.
Improved: when in the hyperlink insert/modify dialog the item 'custom
link text' is not checked during modifying of a node hyperlink, the link
caption is now also
changed. The 'accept' button in the hyperlink 'select tree node' dialog
now also follows this logic.

Clipboard
Added: automatic paste. One can let TreePad PLUS automatically paste all
text which has been placed on the clipboard. Just run TreePad PLUS on
the
background, with automatic paste enabled, and copy texts on the Windows
clipboard using other programs. TreePad PLUS will automatically paste
anything copied
into the currently selected article.
If one chooses menu/edit/automatic paste/plain text, all text is pasted
as plain text (text formatting is removed, and no images are pasted).
If one chooses menu/edit/automatic paste/text, formatting and images,
text is pasted including formatting, images are pasted if they are
separately copied onto the
Windows clipboard.

Evaluation period
Changed: for registered users of TreePad PLUS nothing changes. For
non-registered users, some changes have been made to the way TreePad
PLUS enables one
to evaluate the program before purchasing a serial number:
1. The installation of a fresh version of TreePad PLUS over a previously
installed evaluation version does no longer prolong the original 30-day
evaluation period.
2. Your system clock should not be adjusted during the 30-day evaluation
period. Setting back or forward your system clock may result in
shortening the 30-day
evaluation period! Should this occur, only upon registration can the
program be reactivated. Once registered, TreePad PLUS of course runs
without any restrictions
whatsoever regarding your system clock.

Please note that currently registered TreePad PLUS 3.x and 4.x users can
update to version 4.5 and future 5.x versions for free.

Sincerely,

The Freebyte! team
