Freebyte newsletter Freebyte update: TreePad PLUS 4.0.1

Dear Freebyte newsletter subscriber,

TreePad PLUS has been updated to version 4.0.1 and currently supports
the display and storage of images. Free update for registered users!

New features in TreePad PLUS 4.0.1 compared to version 3.4.5

Images
* TreePad PLUS now supports images! One can paste images in the article
area (using menu/edit/paste) or import (using menu/insert/image from
file). All images are stored into one database file, which has the same
name as the currently active TreePad file, but has extension '.tpz'
(which means 'TreePad Zipped'). A .tpz file is a zip-compressed file
containing one or more full-color bitmap images.
* Images inside the new .tpz file are compressed, this means that
bitmaps, when pasted into TreePad can be compressed by up to 99%. Many
other word processing programs store images as large strings of
characters inside the text file. This is a most inefficient method of
storage, and that's why TreePad PLUS takes a different approach.
* There is no practical limit to the size and number of images stored in
a TreePad PLUS database. A TreePad PLUS 4.x database is easily able to
contain thousands of images (and hundreds of megabytes of images).
* Added: menu/insert/image from file. You can insert images into the
article directly from .bmp, jpg, .gif and .ico files.
* Added: menu/paste image.
* Images can be selected, resized and moved around using the mouse.
Please note that when you resize an image, you need to make another
change in the article (like adding and deleting a space) before the new
size will be remembered when you leave the current article.
* There are a few temporary limitations though: copying images from
TreePad PLUS onto the clipboard is not yet possible, and images are not
yet exported to Web site, RTF and HTML files, but these things will be
addressed in coming versions.

Hyperlinks
* Added: the option to create relative hyperlinks to files and
directories. These hyperlinks are relative to the location of the
currently loaded TreePad file.
* Added: an 'accept' button to the 'Select tree node' dialog, which will
directly close all hyperlink dialogs, and insert a hyperlink to the
selected node into the article.

Tree
* Added: ctrl-drag-and-drop for tree nodes. Pressing the ctrl key while
dragging a node, you can move a node, so that it becomes a direct
sibling of the target node, positioned directly above it. This feature
functions in exactly the same manner as the existing shift-drag-and-drop
function, except that this makes the dragged node become the lower
positioned next sibling of the target node.
* Added: cut subtree (menu/tree/cut), which copies the subtree to
clipboard before deleting it.

Article
* Added to the article context menu: insert node name and insert table
of contents

Article tab
* Bugfix: directly after one edits the node name the caption of the
article tab will be updated.
* Bugfix: when in the top position, the article tab will not
unexpectedly revert to the bottom position anymore after changing other
settings.

Program icon
* New TreePad PLUS program icon, created by Lee Katzz

Web site export (menu/view/options, menu/file/export files/from subtree)

* Improved: the Web site export function now remembers the selected
export directory, so you don't have to browse anymore to the same
directory each time you perform an export.

Files
* Changed: menu/file/close will not automatically create a new tree
(with one new node) anymore, but will show an empty tree and empty
article. One can create a new file using menu/file/new or the toolbar
button.
* Changed: menu/file/new will first ask to save the file, before
creating a new file. This way TreePad PLUS knows the name of the current
file at all time, which enables it to store/cache the images into the
corresponding .tpz file.

Manual
* Improved: the manual has been much improved and optimized by Barry
Andrews.

Please note: registered users of the 3.x version can upgrade to any 4.x
versions without any costs.
