Until 1500 or so, English-speakers indeed generally pronounced this word
"aks" (and generally spelled it "ax.")
    Today's "ask" form apparently began as a childish (or otherwise
careless) mispronunciation. So presumably we must all (except for Homer
Simpson?) stand condemned as careless speakers who not only mangle the
language, but also impose the same mangling on people who actually do
know how to say "aks" ...
