Unique is, well, unique ...

Hi all,

While I'm not an expert on the Pelikan 100 series, I am an expert on the
correct use of language. As a writer/editor for more than 20 years now, I was
always taught and the dictionaries I have here at my desk confirm unique means
one of a kind. Singular. Sole. Having no like or equal.

Some dictionaries will note that common errorneous usage has come to give
unique the somewhat blurrier defintion of rare. But it is a misusage and one
that does not promote precision in language. Unique is a great word because of
it's precise definition when properly used.

While uncommon, rare, and hard to find are areas I will not dare tread on, I
say unique is what it is. It should only be used when something is one of a
kind, without like or equal.

In many instances I like to see the English language evolve and take on new
paths. It keeps it alive and vital. But word meanings are something I'm a
little stricter about when we have a need for words that offer precision.
Unique is just such a word. Sure, we can say "one of a kind," I suppose. But
that would violate Rule No. 17 of Strunk and White. And I love Rule No. 17.

So, while I rarely quibble over issues such as this (although my doing so is
far from unique), the use of the word unique is where I'm a hardliner.

Richard
