[foxboro] sendmail problems after system upgrade

Yesterday our Foxboro field services guy "upgraded" one of our nodes from
software version 6.1.2 to version 6.5. I've got most of the resultant
breakge fixed, but I gave a remaining issue with mail.

I've always just added a line like:

xxx.xx.x.x              mailhost

to /etc/hosts, that points to a corporate machine that will accept mail for
relaying. I've re-added this line to etc host, and I'm able to ping it from
the AW, but I'm getting messages like this in /var/log/syslog

Aug 27 08:59:35 AW0400 sendmail[5537]: GAA11741: IVE05537: DSN: Host
unknown (Name server: mailhost.: host not found)
Aug 27 08:59:35 AW0400 sendmail[5537]: IVE05537:
to=stan@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, delay=00:00:00, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=relay,
relay=mailhost., stat=Host unkno
 wn (Name server: mailhost.: host not found)
 Aug 27 08:59:35 AW0400 sendmail[5537]: IVE05537: IVF05537: return to sender:
Hos t unknown (Name server: mailhost.: host not found)
 Aug 27 08:59:35 AW0400 sendmail[5537]: IVF05537:
to=stan@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, delay=00:00:00, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=relay,
relay=mailhost., stat=Host unkno wn (Name server: mailhost.: host not found)
  Aug 27 08:59:35 AW0400 sendmail[5537]: IVE05537: Saved message in
/usr/tmp/dead.  letter

also, on other machines, if I do a ps -ef and grep for "send", I get:

root   966     1  0   Mar 04 ?        0:19 /usr/lib/sendmail -bd -q1h

Which I don't get on the downgraded (excuse me upgraded) system.

I was wondering if anyone on the list had any insight, before I spend a lot
of time diagnosing this problem.

Thanks for any help.
