Hi Ken,

If you've been using the Foxboro script dmp0_8MM or so, then there should
be no problem with the dump.
The blocksize is setup to be 20.
Have a look in /usr/local/dmp0_8MM and you will find a line like this:
options='0ucbdsf 20 54000 13000'
meaning:
0    dump zero.
u    Update the dump record.
c    Cartridge.
b    Blocking factor.
d    Tape density.
s    Volume size.
f    Dump file name.

If however, you've done away with all that restrictive nonsense in the
script about blocks, density and size like I have, then Foxboro has a
problem but they should still be able to read the tape by doing the same.

The problem you expresses relies most likely in the fact that you've not
specified the blocking size, which will result in a default blocking size
of 126 and Foxboro stuck to the blocking size of 20.

It is perfectly ok to have different blocking factors between tape devices
as long as the reading device has a blocking factor EQUAL or GREATER than
the one that is used to make the tape.

To make life easy at Foxboro you better remake the tape and make sure you
have the blocking factor set to 20.
Don't worry about tape density and volume size. You can leave that to the
drives to sort out. They are perfectly capable of that.

Hi all,

We recently purched a Sony quad speed DDS-2 tape drive.
When using the ufsdump utility to back up an entire hard drive, the Sony
drive uses 512 blocks.
We sent a tape off to Foxboro and they could not read it. The Foxboro tape
drives use 1024 blocks.

I know with the tar command you can specify block size in multiples of 512
with the B switch.
Is there a similar switch for the usfdump?
