Re: [foxboro] slow X-windows update

An update to the list on my problem, which I solved this morning. As I
related before, we had very slow communication on 1 of 2 fiber runs that
come off the same switch. We had replaced every single component in the
loop, to no avail. We ran a new fiber on Friday and it seemed marginally
faster, but still nowhere as fast as it should have been. I came in this
morning and decided to set up a second computer so the operator could view
2 monitors and not have to change graphics (until I was able to solve
this). When I hooked up the 2nd computer ... it was FAST. Now remember, I
had done this before (or so I thought). With the 2 computers side-by-side,
I began swapping components, and there was nothing that I changed that
fixed the problem. The main symptom was the activity lights on the
fiber/copper media converter, which were blinking extremely quickly. So I
put in a spare media converter (which I knew was good, because I had used
it the week before) ... and the light still blinked fast ... so, as a last
resort, I replaced the 9V power supply transformer to the converter, and
problem was fixed.

In all my days, I don't think I've ever seen a power supply transformer
fail like that ... it apparently gave enough current to power the
converter, but not enough for the laser to work properly.

So the motto is, never overlook the smallest, most unlikely of components
when troubleshooting a problem. After spending 5 weeks of my time, 6 days
of a contractor, and the cost of 500 ft of fiber, (not to mention the grief
I've gotten from production) ... I won't make that mistake again.
