I checked the man pages and Google to find out what +s did, but your
explanation is clearer than anything that I found.

BTW Alex, congratulations on your promotion.

I am grateful that you continue to take time to  us make the IA systems
that we are responsible for, run as well as we can.

For what it is worth, the reason pref (or any other program that uses the
OM) must have root permissions is that it accesses a shared memory segment
used by the OM.

This segment has permissions on it and root is the only user.

By setting the set-uid bit, you are telling the OS to run the program as if
it were invoked by the owner of the program rather than the user of the
program.
