Re: [foxboro] icc2html open source project status

Winston,

I do not know how it compares to what you already have, but we have already
been using some in house developed software to provide the many desired
capabilities that you want to include in your software. I did not write
the software and will not be able to provide it to anyone or help them, but
I think you know who did write it. Call up is very fast and the Linux
software is only running something like a Pentium 200 PC. Some of the
capabilities we have are:

1) All information is regenerated automatically every night using code on
the Foxboro system to run iccapi and other scripts to dump control
configuration info., links used in graphics, historian configuration info.,
etc. and then transferring the info. to Linux server running freeware
webserver and database software.

2) Block printouts are available as html. Block parameters that are
linked to a source parameter have active HTML links for the source C:B to
take the user to the source block.

3) Can do web searches to provide where used info. for blocks or block &
parameters that match the search text (multiple wild cards can be used).
Searching can be done on historian, control blocks, graphics, history,
sequence code, etc. When the data displays, active links are provided
to take you to blocks or sequence code that you are interested in

4) Sequence code text is provide with or without line numbers.

5) Password access to the information can be implemented.

6) A search can be done on by I/O module or group of I/O modules to show
what I/O blocks are configured to that I/O module.

Dear List,

We now have an Open Source project set up at sourceforge.net for the
icc2html project(Yea!). I have the source from Pedro. But I have not
uploaded any files yet (Boo). That is because we need to answer some
questions first. Here is my vision--I am describing it so it can be
modified with suggestions from the group. If you want to see what it looks

like, go to http://sourceforge.net and do a search for icc2html. (There is

nothing there yet, but you get the idea)

The project itself has two types of people 1)developers, who change code
and 2) administrators, who decide who the developers are. (There is no
category for users because anybody can download the "released" files.) The

sourceforge project has its own mail list and project web site (I have not
uploaded anything there yet) and stuff. This would be primarily used for
developer-developer communications. There is a spot there for users to
enter feature requests, bug tracking, etc.

Initially I have some questions as to the feature set. I would like to
gather some initial feature requests on this list. Question #1 Should we
keep feature requests on this list or eventually move them to the
sourceforge site? Most of the implementations are a hyperlinked version of

the iccprt output displayed in frames to make navigation easy. I had
envisioned more of a detail-display interface with HTML templates (similar
to detail displays) being shown. The nice thing about the hyperlinked
iccptr file is that new parameters come out of the file automatically and
do not require any (much) updating of the code. The problem with HTML
templates (and as I write this, I am becoming convinced this is their fatal

flaw) is they need updating as new blocks and block parameters are
introduced. Q #2 What should this look like?

What about installability? Q #3 Does the thing need to run with a minimum

of extra baggage? or will users tolerate installing perl and whatever else
to make it work?

Somebody send a feature request to the project at sourceforge.net, I want
to see what happens.

We will probably need a few more developers. We will need testers to run
on various versions and someone to integrate the packaging/setup of the
whole thing. Any volunteers?
