I have been trying to get a formal answer from Invensys for the
availabilityof Windows APIs to
replace the functionality provided by the Solaris IPC and OM C function
libraries for a couple years.
Apparently there is nothing coming for Windows so all those apps written to
run on Solaris using
those functions are dead once the Solaris10 boxes are phased out.

We have given out hope in getting anything for Windows and have ordered
Solaris10 machines
for the mesh. They do provide these libraries and the apps can be ported to
Solaris10 fairly easily.
(This info comes from a friend that ported some fairly complicated code to a
Solaris10 beta machine).

Unfortunately, this is a very expensive proposition and we have not actually
been able to get a production
Solaris10 machine yet.

Meanwhile the Windows 2003 Server sits in the corner wasting cpu cycles
doingnothing in particular.

My believe is that the OM C libraries (and such) exist for Windows but
Invensys does NOT allow customers to use them.

As far a I know they recommend the AIM* API.

We recently ported a few C applications to Java but had to change all the OM
related stuff to Jove (which depends on AIM*). Performance is not what it
used to be but still acceptable. The advantage is that all the applications
for this project are Java base on Jove which makes it pretty standard.

I would have preferred to just recompile (with some minor changes maybe) the
existing code but due to the unavailability of the libraries this was not an
option.

On the other hand, we use IAconnect (alias FoxOmOpc, a 'German Special:
Deutsche Grundligkeit!), running on one of our AW70's which does NOT use
AIM* but direct OM calls and has great performance.
To me this is proof enough that the OM libraries do exist. How else would it
be possible to program something like FoxOmOpc???

However, even if the OM libraries would be made available, I would prefer to
use code based on the FoxOmOpc because there's a whole lot of free OPC stuff
which you can use and plenty of example code.
