Re: [foxboro] foxboro Digest V4 #108

Hmmm...interesting comment. I spent about 10 years doing TDC3000 before
coming to the Foxboro side of the fence. Each system has its strengths
and weaknesses (which I won't bore everyone with here), but I didn't find
the TDC more awkward, slow, or painful in general than I/A. It's more
rigid, for lack of a better term, but this works both ways: the TDC tended
to be more robust and more immune to typos and other user error than I/A
appears to be. The big disadvantage to the graphics builder was that you
had to type in the commands, but once you learned the shortcuts, it was
pretty fast. The graphics were stark in appearance, but overall no less
functional than I/A DM graphics (I'd compare Foxview more closely to TDC
GUS graphics, but I didn't do a lot of GUS graphic building, and can't
comment on it). And I did 4 major software upgrades on a system over
those 10 years, on-process; this wasn't even possible with I/A until
recently (and I still don't know if I'd try it).
I don't know about Experion, but I would hope that all the "next-gen"
control systems (Experion/Plantscape, Emerson DeltaV, Rockwell
ProcessLogix, maybe even Archestra when Foxboro ever finishes it, others I
left out) would be better in the configuration department than either I/A
or TDC. Of course, all those systems -- except Archestra, if Foxboro
continues to support Unix -- above the controller level are
Windows-based...

While I have consulted on Foxboro systems for several years, I have only
recently again had the "opportunity" to do some work on Honeywell TDC. I
have to
say it is a painfully slow and awkward system both in configuring
points/loops
and in making even rudimentary graphics or mods. And it doesn't look like
Experion PKS (my next task) will be much better. Heaven knows I've had my
difficulties with Foxboro project engineering and attitude, but I still
maintain
the Fox I/A system is worlds above most others - case in point. If Fox is
now
playing with this basic success (Unix/Solaris), will I be able to maintain
this
opinion?
