Hi Jason,
I agree with Alex - Why do you need "dial-up"? =20
Having asked, we have a "dial-up" access arrangement for use by our opera=
tions managers.
Basically the dial-up is managed by an ISP who grants access to the corpo=
rate WAN. =20
Once authenticated to the corporate WAN. A Microsoft W2k Terminal Server =
allows access to the Control Systems network via a Terminal Services Ses=
sion.
=20
The W2k Server is always available on the corporate WAN.
This is not the neatest way of doing things but it works for us. If you n=
eed any more information please feel free to contact me directly.
Regards
Ashley.

Jason,
Re: Information
Check out the FoxRemote manual on FoxDoc or the web site. It has useful
information. You could also use the FoxRemote Configuration 3 equipment f=
or
dial-up lines.
Re: X compression
The version of X windows that we run is release 5. It doesn't have the
lightweight X support that comes in release 6. For that and other reasons=
,
we use GoGlobal from GraphOn for PCs over dial-ups as opposed to Exceed
which requires lightweight X on the server.
In short, you won't get compression and the displays might be sluggish.
My question to you is do you really want and need dial-up lines?=20
If you can lease a dedicated line, you can get excellent performance usin=
g
straight out of the box without compression. There are so many offerings
today: dedicated analog lines, ISDN, digital leased lines, DSL, ADSL, cab=
le,
etc that dialup seems to be a very unattractive option.

Alex Johnson

=09Subject: [foxboro] dial-in to 51 series box?
=09We're looking at remote acces to an AW51x [x=3DB,D,E, or whatever
alphabet
=09soup they're up to now ;)] from another unix box. The most natural
way to
=09do this seems to hang a modem off the AW, and set up a dial-up
account.
=09Does anyone have either pointers to the "how to" descriptions, and
the
=09"gotcha" list. Or, does anyone have a better way of doing this? In
my
=09naivete, I've assumed that dial-up ppp with X protocol compression
was the
=09way to go, but I'm open to suggestions.
=09Cheers
