Re: [foxboro] client server

Alex,

There has been a lot of ideas floating around for the last week and I may have
missed one or two but I think the topic with highest need is a faster
mechanism to get the settable parameters out of the controller. The mechanism
can be determined by Invensys. If the mechanism is part of a new release, it
would be good if the mechanism is made available to those who cannot shut down
controllers for the next few years. There is certainly good value in such a
function.

Once the upload function is quicker or replaced, the iccapi tools can export
the data to ascii files. The direction of transfer should be out of the
system, not into. Protecting the data from invalid changes into the CP's would
be too dificult and the task would be much harder that just getting the data
out.

There are third party packages that can then take this data and populate a
database so that users can querry and find "where used" or other information.
Some users have built there own tools for this function. Invensys can look at
this need and determine whether they want to compete here or not.

Regards,

Terry

Re: I keep forgetting that we are talking about a report format and not
real-time access to the control database. (Am I wrong about that?...)

You are correct. I asked about reporting formats.

Direct manipulation of tables will NOT be provided. Tools to manipulate
the data in the database in a protected manner, e.g., similar to ICC
Driver Task, are planned, but that's another conversation.

Re: The rest of your note
I'm not advocating anything. It's up to your compatriots to answer that
question.

My goal is to learn what people want and how they would use it if we
were to provide it.

Re: Your time
I appreciate the time everyone on the thread has contributed. I've
learned a lot so far.

First of all, thank you, Alex, for wanting our input. =3D20

I keep forgetting that we are talking about a report format and not
real-time access to the control database. (Am I wrong about that? We
are in a shutdown here and I am not giving this thread my full
attention.) Given that it is a report, what can I do with an SQL table
that I cannot do with an Excel spreadsheet? To the SQL queries I have
written (not that many), the difference is practically invisible and I
can make it go away altogether by just importing the data into a table,
if I really really want it there. I presume that something similar is
true about XML. As long as the data does not show up as Delimited
ASCII, I don't see much difference between the other three choices. It
seems to me now that the spreadsheet--being a simpler format--may have a
slight edge. That edge would be that it is the common ground between
SQL and XML. Either of the two formats can pull the data without manual
intervention. Am I missing something?
