My understanding is extremely lacking, but to provide Alex some
feedback, here is what I would like to see from IEE in terms of
accessing and modifying data:
1) Some method, akin to iccprt, to obtain a list of compound, blocks,
and parameters in the CP work files at least, if not the running CPs
themselves. The preferred format of this "list of stuff" would probably
be some sort of web-based format so that I could view that data in a web
browser. It should have hyperlinks to aid in navigation and be
presented in some sort of easily readable, tabular format, with sort,
search, and as David mentioned, "where used" capabilities. From my
limited knowledge of XML, this looks reasonable and compatible with
accepted standards. To go from XML to Excel or other flat-file formats
seems pretty straightforward.
2) Some method to make wholesale changes in block parameters or to add
or delete blocks without having to add/modify/delete each block
individually using the graphical interface. This would be analogous to
iccdrvr.tsk. I wouldn't have a problem with somehow using the graphical
interface to make wholesale changes, if that were possible, but I would
imagine some sort of scripting language would have to be developed or
employed. If a scripting language is used, it could have any syntax as
long as it is easy to use. VB doesn't really qualify on that score if
you don't already use it, but it is at least a widely known and accepted
scripting language within the Microsoft world.

Perhaps my understanding is lacking. It wouldn't=3D20
be the first time. Also keep in mind that most=3D20
of us on this list are coming at this from the=3D20
current C:B.P , DM or FoxView frame of reference=3D20
and we might not have adequate understanding of=3D20
the new system to know what we would like. I=3D20
would love to be able to get a report on a "tag"=3D20
(whatever that means to the new system) that=3D20
shows everywhere it is used, if it is historized,=3D20
and what displays it is on. If the tool is SQL=3D20
or XML doesn't matter much to me. ASCII is going=3D20
to be cumbersome for maintaining that kind of information.
Seems Archestra and XML are frequently mentioned=3D20
in the same breath in press releases. And there=3D20
are a lot of easy ways to import XML into existing products like excel.
