The only way I can think of would be attaching an embedded script to the 
display which runs a shell script similar to Alex' script that checks 
the blocks and sets DM variables which could then be queried in the display.

But that sounds not very elegant (like increasing the time it takes to 
call a display dramatically if a block is not there).
