If that be the case, then why do the arrow keys work without Shift on 
Solaris machines?  I never used WP30s or earlier, so I don't know how it 
worked on them.  In any event, this to me is one of those "principle of 
least surprise" things.  You don't have to hold down Shift to get arrow 
keys to work on most modern computers.

This is the standard behavior. It dates back to the original development 
of
the I/A Series.

For those too young to remember, GEMS was a GUI for DOS way before windows
existed. We copied a lot of its stylistic touches with the I/A Series HMI.

assume this is one of those touches.
