If you don't mind, I'd like to ask the community of users about how and why
they use PCs to show FV/DM displays. I know that this is not scientific,
but
I'm curious.
So, if you use PCs, would you please answer a few questions for me?
1) How are the PCs used?
We use PC's for two reasons
1) In facilities where it is a long distance between the main control room
to the process area, we use them over the company LAN for a remote operator
station. This has also become a safety issue in some of our plants, as
operations wants to be able to log on and remotely do a controlled shutdown
in case of an emergency. Company supplied PC at a fraction of the cost of a
WP.
2) Supervisors, PSM coordinators and techs can access from there offices.
a. On a scale of 0 to 10 where
i. 0 is
never
uses I/A Series Applications and
ii. 10 is never
uses non-I/A Series applications (except eXceed of course), where would you
rank the use of your PCs?
Used in every facility that we are running I/A 3
For example, I think a 10 user is an operator console, a 7 or 8 user might
have company specific programs that need to be run on operator console, a 3
user might be a PC at home used for dial-up support.
2) Why are PCs used? A and D
a. Low-Cost
b. Environmental hardening
c. Remote location hard to reach with a PC
d. Dial-up (or VPN or whatever) access from home
3) What other types of HMI (beside WPs) should we be
offering?
We are currently looking for a HMI that does not have all of the
functionality of EXCEED. Very few of our users need or should have FTP and
the other functions that EXCEED offers.
I use EXCEED with VPN (when I do not have access to the company LAN) to be
able to remote the 6 systems that I am responsible for.
Thanks,
AJ
