William, Thanks for your quick reply. I have been out trying your suggestion, but I have no success yet. I bypassed the Wyse terminal cable altogether. I tried it with a null modem and without. The Black Box (the little doo-dad) LEDs show no difference between using the null modem and not using it. The results are the same whether we are going through the Wyse cable or not. =20 Now, I'm thinking two things: =20 * I may actually be connected, but my communications protocol is not set correctly (both ends of the conversation are waiting on the other to speak). I've tried emulating a VT100, a VT52, a Wyse 50+, a Wyse 60, a Linux box, and an SCO UNIX terminal. So, that may not be it, either. I've used ReflectionX and HyperTerminal on my laptop. On Monday, I'll try again with a different laptop. In the mean time, I'll read Rod Deen's xterm80.pdf from the Cassandra Web site. * It's Friday and it's Labor Day Weekend. I can carry the working Wyse terminal over to make this week's back up. I'm still going to keep working at this problem, though. First, this reply is based on memory, not research, so it may not exactly be error free. The cable which connects to the "VT100 compatible terminal" does funny things. Don't exactly remember how it is wired, but suffice to say that it is of no use for any connection other than to the=20 "VT100 compatible terminal". =20 At the computer end it connects to either the processor itself, or=20 a lead in cable or splitter. That's the point where you want to start your computer connection, because that is where the pinout and connection is "industry standard" (for whatever that is worth). As I recollect, a standard serial cable with null-modem wiring works from there. (unless your AP is an AP50, in which case you are dealing with a circular connector and need a Sun cable). Good luck. (Chuck) Sent: Friday, September 01, 2006 10:34 AM To: foxboro@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [foxboro] VT100 Emulation Friends, I lost a Wyse VT100 compatible terminal a couple of weeks ago. Generally, the only time it was used was during tape backups of the AP. Before buying a replacement, I want to try to use my laptop to gain access. I have B0193AC -Rev T in front of me, but I have had no luck so far. (Is there a more appropriate one I should use instead?) I searched the archives of this list last evening and found some very interesting information--on other subjects related to this issue. I have checked the cables--several times. I have put a little doo-dad in series between the nine-pin connectors at the back of my laptop. I know that the TD LED is green when I am disconnected, but it goes to red when I try to connect. I tried using a null modem, it didn't help. I am trying the laptop side-by-side with a working Wyse terminal on a test bed, so I am certain of the pre-existing wiring and the responsiveness of the test AP. Before I lose what's left of my sanity, I thought I would ask a few questions. Does anyone know for certain that this cannot be done? Has anyone done this before? Does anyone know "the one little trick" that makes this work? I have one last question today. Why is it that the simplest things--the "Pssht, heck yeah I can do that!" problems--are always the hardest ones to figure out?
