In all fairness to Invensys, letterbugs had more than their fair share
of
problems over the years, so the handheld probably seemed like a good
idea.
Some of those letterbug problems included:
* Several QC problems resulting in large batches of letterbugs with some
legs slightly too long or too short.
* Having to remember that while most letterbug characters would work
either
direction there were 2 that had to be right side up.
* Mystery letterbugs that would work fine (especially in FBMs) before
upgrades but fail after a software upgrade.
* You could snoop the nodebus to find a station trying to boot with a
letterbug that didn't match what it should have been, but couldn't do
the
same on the fieldbus.

A handheld configurator that you can take to a field enclosure to check
the
letterbug assignment seems reasonable.  When they first came out I
thought
it was a great idea because that way I didn't have to pay for my own
handheld.  As everyone has pointed out the handheld has it's own
problems:
* Batteries don't stay charged in between the rare occasions when we
actually need the configurator.
* Hardware changes quickly and letterbug software isn't keeping up.
* No visual indication on the station as to what the letterbug
assignment
actually is - a little feedback panel would have been nice, although
probably another thing to possibly fail.

So, best solution?  Not sure at this point, but I'd like to see the app
available for laptops and current phones with an IR port.
