Re: [foxboro] Using pref from user: ia/remote

Mark's right; my kill_dm script I use to zap idle DMs works on remote ones
quite well. But it runs as root.

And I was playing with doing a remote Foxview/Foxdraw session the other
day. If I start them up as a non-root user, the "FoxView" pick in FoxDraw
does nothing (I presume this essentially uses the same mechanism as pref).

I too think it is a permissions issue. Anyone the precise mechanism pref
uses to communicate with another DM? Sockets? Pipes?

By "no longer working" I mean that the pref command works well when a Unix
user is logged in as user "root"; but when the user is logged in as Unix
user "ia", the program "pref" exits normally, but the pref's dmcmd command
is not executed by the Display Manager.

For example, on the AW console, I can successfully use the following
command:
pref -DMNAME dmcmd 'msglin TEST'

Now, if I use an Xterminal (such as Exceed), log in the system using the
ia/remote technique, and start up a VT100 session from the display manager,
the pref command no longer works. It appears to me to be a Unix file
permission problem.

I have tried to do some interesting things to get around it, such as "chmod
a+s pref" (set-user-id); but this does not help. In desperation, I have
even tried "rexec AWNAME /usr/local/pref ...", hoping the IA system would
have a client/server security hole, but had no success, since rexec also
requires root user access.

It is definitely not an "enable omsets" issue. I have even tested it to
make sure.

Any more ideas?

What do you mean with "no longer" Did it work before?
If that is so, maybe you upgraded FoxView which copies a new .profile to
/opt/ia and maybe overwrites some other files too.
By default a remote station:

- doesn't allow omsets
- protects value 100 which disables 2nd level menus and some other things
- does not allow alarms acks etc.
and more.

Try to include the following in an environment of your choice to test this:

protect all
unprotect all
enable omsets

And check out the /usr/fox/wp/data/fv_cmds and am_cmds files to comment out
the lines that protect some functions in there. I don't have the files here
but when you look into them it is quite obvious what to do.
