Re: [foxboro] That DM to FoxView Conversion Tool

Adam,

The choice of display files locations are user's chjoice. If you put it
under /usr/junk it will work. But you will have to change your top menu bar to
point it to /us/junk and when you pick the menu, the display file list will
show up.

/opt/menu is a Invensys offer and it does not mean a customer will have to
use this. In the many jobs that I have worked on, I always follow the
customer's direction as this is more comfortable with them. I do change the
top menu bar to map it and some times even have sub-menu bars to point to files
under the same directory but go deeper.

What I am trying to say is, the customer is king and Invensys has allowed any
structure. It the customer old files are under /usr than it will be more
comfortable for them to see the files are under the same location.

The DM markers are the marker set such as pump, valve etc which many
customers use for their display instead of making up a symbol for each. It
works fine under DM, but FoxView does not have a marker set. So when you do a
conversion, the markers will disappear (even though the linkage still exists).
One must then build a new symbol and move the connections to new symbol. This
is labor intensive and error prone.

I post the quesion hoping some one out there has worked out a good solution.

I am happy to see that GCconvert will convert all paths (since I have not
worked with it as yet, my comment is not correct...sorry!).

I wasn't aware that one could retain the files in the /usr folder.
Why is /opt/menu a problem? We found, with our limited experience of
FoxView so far, putting them there made life easy.

You can't use GConvert to convert g files to the same location (didn't
consider this possibility). What I suggest is if you want to do this,
have a single mapping from /usr/ to /hello/ or what ever you like, and
when the conversion is finished, rename the hello directory to usr
(after renaming /usr to something else).

I don't know what you mean by "the display file may still retain the old
path names". It's a three stage process. 1) DM (pdf) to g. 2) g to g. 3)
g to fdf. During stage 2, GConvert converts all paths as far as I know.

There is no mechanism to convert the DM Markers in g convert. It only
performs the 3 functions mentioned in the documentation. I confess I
don't know what DM markers are?

Adam
