Re: [foxboro] Take an unscientific poll!

For a general-purpose OS, that would probably do what you ask of it in the
context of your average I/A system, I too would rather be
vendor-independent and go open-source...probably one of the BSDs since they
seem to change somewhat less than Linux. I like Linux, use it at home and
at work, but for a control system, I like the API- and
architecture-stability of the BSDs a bit more.

For very high robustness and or outstanding real-time performance on the
Intel platform, I'd probably run QNX. Single vendor, yes, but they make
some truly amazing software. (I too feel that Intel/AMD is now the way to
go for commodity workstation/server hardware).

As for Foxboro or Not: while I've discovered some nice things about the
I/A system, there are too many things about it and about Invensys itself
that make me uncomfortable. I probably would not bid Invensys on a new
plant. This in no way reflects on the Invensys folks on this list; y'all
have generally been great. But alas, your company does not appear to take
your (or its customers') advice for its direction.

Re: Foxboro vs. Non-Foxboro...

Well, I was just trying to see what the feeling was on architecture
generally, irrespective of automation suppliers. I guess I should have
included Linux as a choice instead of Other, but I figured people would be
able to figure that out.

It's amazing how many people read this. 22 votes already. No ballot box
stuffing, anyone!!!
